In April 2018 reports surfaced regarding a massive data breach affecting the Vietnamese technology giant VNG Corporation. Although the discovery was made later the actual compromise occurred in May 2015. The incident involved the unauthorized acquisition of over 163 million user records which were subsequently traded and distributed on popular underground hacking forums. The breach was particularly significant due to the exposure of personal identifiers and weakly hashed passwords which posed a long term security risk to the affected user base across various VNG digital services.
