In late 2018 an unsecured database containing information related to Walmart users surfaced on various underground forums. The incident involved the exposure of approximately 3.2 million records. The leaked data primarily consisted of email addresses and plain text passwords. While the exact origin of the breach was not officially confirmed by the company investigators suggested the data could have been harvested through credential stuffing or a misconfigured secondary server. The availability of passwords in unencrypted format significantly increased the risk of account takeover for affected customers across the retail platform.
