In January 2025 information surfaced regarding a potential data exposure involving WebMoney users. The incident affected approximately 5000 individuals and included sensitive details such as email addresses, nicknames, and user signatures. Most critically, passwords stored as MD5 hashes were part of the exposed dataset. While the data is associated with WebMoney accounts, some security researchers suggest the primary source of the breach might have been a third party service or a related platform rather than the main payment infrastructure itself. The leak poses a risk of credential stuffing and unauthorized account access due to the weak hashing algorithm used for passwords.
