In July 2019 the popular webcomic xkcd suffered a data breach affecting its forum users. The incident occurred after an unauthorized party gained access to the forum database. The exposed data included sensitive user information such as account identifiers and hashed passwords. Security researchers noted that the passwords were stored using the MD5 phpb3 hashing algorithm which is considered weak by modern standards. The breach was publicly disclosed after the data began circulating in the security community and on breach notification platforms.
