In July 2012 the Yahoo Voices online publication platform suffered a significant security breach. An attacker used a SQL injection vulnerability to gain unauthorized access to the database. The incident resulted in the exposure of approximately 450000 user accounts. A major security concern discovered during the investigation was that the passwords were stored in plain text without any encryption or hashing. This event highlighted the risks of poor credential management and the dangers of password reuse across different online services during that era.
